Omniverse provided the tools to create such a highly detailed environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOmniverse is the only platform that\u2019s able to visualize such a vast amount of components in high fidelity and make the simulation physically accurate,\u201d Wagner said. \u201cMy work is a proof of concept \u2014 if Omniverse is fit to visualize Santa\u2019s factory, it\u2019s fit to visualize the daily material provisioning load for a real-world automotive factory, for example, which has a similar order of complexity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ipolog recently provided BMW with highly detailed elements like racks and boxes for a digital twin of the automaker\u2019s factory.<\/p>\n<p>With the help of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipolog.ai\/en\/the-software\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ipolog software<\/a> and other tools, BMW is creating a digital twin-based <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/2021\/04\/13\/nvidia-bmw-factory-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">factory of the future<\/a> with NVIDIA Omniverse, which enables the automaker to simulate complex production scenarios taking place in more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F0huXhFfgw0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">6 million square meters<\/a> of factory space.<\/p>\n<p>Digital twin simulation speeds output and increases efficiency for BMW\u2019s entire production cycle \u2014 from the examination of engineering detail for vehicle parts to the optimization of workflow at the factory-plant level.<\/p>\n<p>Wagner used <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.omniverse.nvidia.com\/prod_kit\/prod_kit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Omniverse Kit<\/a>, a toolkit for building Omniverse-native extensions and applications, to create the santa-facturing environment.<\/p>\n<p>The developer is also exploring <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.nvidia.com\/nvidia-omniverse-platform\/code-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Omniverse Code<\/a> \u2014 a recently launched app that serves as an integrated development environment for developers to easily build Omniverse extensions, apps or microservices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe principle of building on the shoulders of giants is in the DNA of the Omniverse ecosystem and the kit-based environment,\u201d Wagner said. \u201cExisting open-source extensions, which any developer can contribute to, provide a good base from which to start off and quickly create a dedicated app or extension for digital twins.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><b>Visualizing the \u2018Santa-Factory\u2019<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Using Omniverse, which includes <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.nvidia.com\/physx-sdk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PhysX<\/a> \u2014 a software development kit that provides advanced physics simulation \u2014 Wagner transformed 2D illustrations of the santa-factory into a physically accurate 3D scene. The process was simple, he said. He \u201cpiled up a lot of elements and let PhysX work its magic.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55468\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55468\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/michael-wagner-process.png\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/michael-wagner-process-672x162.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"162\"><\/p>\n<p><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-55468\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A 2D representation of Santa\u2019s workshop turned into a 3D rendering using Omniverse.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To create the glacial North Pole environment, Wagner used the Unreal Engine 4 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/omniverse\/#apps-connectors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Omniverse Connector<\/a>. To bring the trusty elves to life, he brought in animations from Blender. And to convert the huge datasets to <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.nvidia.com\/usd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universal Scene Description<\/a> format, Wagner worked with Germany-based 3D software development company <a href=\"https:\/\/netallied.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NetAllied Systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55471\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55471\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/michael-wagner-factory-location.png\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/michael-wagner-factory-location-672x378.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"378\"><\/p>\n<p><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-55471\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A rendering of elves tending to reindeer near Santa\u2019s workshop, created with NVIDIA Omniverse.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What better example of material supply and flow in manufacturing than millions of toy parts getting delivered to Santa\u2019s workshop?
