{"id":2672,"date":"2022-12-13T16:47:03","date_gmt":"2022-12-13T16:47:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/salarydistribution.com\/machine-learning\/2022\/12\/13\/ferrari-of-finance-accelerated-computing-drives-milan-bank-forward\/"},"modified":"2022-12-13T16:47:03","modified_gmt":"2022-12-13T16:47:03","slug":"ferrari-of-finance-accelerated-computing-drives-milan-bank-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/salarydistribution.com\/machine-learning\/2022\/12\/13\/ferrari-of-finance-accelerated-computing-drives-milan-bank-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"Ferrari of Finance: Accelerated Computing Drives Milan Bank Forward"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-url=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/2022\/12\/13\/accelerated-computing-milan-bank\/\" data-title=\"Ferrari of Finance: Accelerated Computing Drives Milan Bank Forward\" data-hashtags=\"\">\n<p>Banks require more than cash in the vault these days, they also need<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/2021\/09\/01\/what-is-accelerated-computing\/\"> accelerated computing<\/a> in the back room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe boost we\u2019re getting with GPUs not only significantly improved our performance at the same cost, it helped us redefine our business and sharpen our focus on customers,\u201d said Marco Airoldi, who\u2019s been head of financial engineering for more than 20 years at Mediobanca, a Milan-based banking group that provides lending and investment services in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>High performance computing is especially important for investment banks whose services involve computationally intensive transactions on baskets of securities and derivative products.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks, in part, to its GPU-powered systems, Mediobanca is thriving amid the current market downturn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t disclose numbers, but I can tell you with a good degree of confidence I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve had more than a dozen negative days in the last 250 trading days,\u201d said Stefano Dova, a Ph.D. in finance and head of markets at Mediobanca.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s, in part, because Airoldi\u2019s team enabled real-time risk management on GPUs early in the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a fundamental step forward,\u201d said Dova, who plays his electric piano or clarinet to unwind at the end of a stressful day. \u201cYou can lose money on a daily basis in the current market volatility, but we\u2019ve been very happy with the results we\u2019ve had in the last six months.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><b>Sharing the Wealth<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Now, Mediobanca is preparing to offer its customers the same computing capabilities it enjoys.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the GPUs are so fast, we can offer clients the ability to build their own products and see their risk profiles in real time, so they can decide where and when to invest \u2014 you can only do this if you have the computational power for live pricing,\u201d Dova said.<\/p>\n<p>The service, now in final testing, puts customers at the center of the bank\u2019s business. It uses automation made possible by the parallel computing capabilities of the bank\u2019s infrastructure, Airoldi notes.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Next Stop: Machine Learning<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Looking further ahead, Airoldi\u2019s group is mapping the investment bank\u2019s journey into AI.<\/p>\n<p>It starts with sentiment analysis, powered by natural language processing. That will help the bank understand market trends more deeply, so it can make even better investment decisions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI will give us useful ways to map customer and investor behaviors, and we will invest in the technology to develop more AI apps for finance,\u201d said Dova.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61288\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61288\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Mediobanca-Milan-x1280.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Mediobanca-Milan-x1280-672x357.jpg\" alt=\"Mediobanca Milan uses GPUs\" width=\"672\" height=\"357\"><\/p>\n<p><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-61288\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mediobanca\u2019s headquarters is in central Milan, around the corner from the famed Teatro alla Scala.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Their work comes as banks of all sorts are starting to apply AI to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/industries\/finance\/\">dozens of use cases<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI is one of the most promising technologies in finance,\u201d said Airoldi, who foresees using it for classical quantitative problems, too.<\/p>\n<h2><b>It\u2019s All About the Math<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>In the last few years, the bank has added dozens of GPUs to its infrastructure. Each offers up to 100x the performance of a CPU, he said.<\/p>\n<p>That means Mediobanca can do more with less.
