Don\u2019t miss Marvelous Designer\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.addevent.com\/event\/Rw17326691\">upcoming community livestream<\/a> demonstrating a workflow with the new Omniverse Connector on Wednesday, June 14.<\/p>\n<h2><b>One for the (Stone) Ages<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>A 14-year veteran in the creative community, Bangalore-based Sathya has long been enamored by animals and the concept of extinction. \u201cAnimals become extinct for various reasons,\u201d he said. This fact inspired Sathya to create an environment design and tell a unique story using materials, lighting and animation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64594\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64594\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/studio-itns-keerthan-sathya-wk60-moodboard-1280w.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-64594\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/studio-itns-keerthan-sathya-wk60-moodboard-1280w-672x377.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"377\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64594\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gathering reference material is 3D modeling 101.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cTraditional polygon modeling isn\u2019t my cup of tea,\u201d Sathya admitted. Instead, he used Adobe Substance 3D Modeler to seamlessly sculpt his models in 3D. His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/studio\/laptops-desktops\/\">NVIDIA Studio HP ZBook laptop<\/a> with NVIDIA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/design-visualization\/rtx-professional-laptops\/\">RTX 5000 graphics<\/a> unlocked GPU-accelerated filters to speed up material creation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSculpting in virtual reality is so much fun, and so fast,\u201d said the artist. \u201cI could finalize models in just a few hours, all while eliminating all those pesky anatomy details!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also deployed Substance 3D Modeler\u2019s automatic UV wrapping feature to generate UV islands once models were imported, making it easier to apply paints, textures and materials.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64597\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64597\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/studio-itns-keerthan-sathya-wk60-clay-render-1280w.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-64597\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/studio-itns-keerthan-sathya-wk60-clay-render-1280w-672x378.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"378\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64597\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sculpting in virtual reality with Adobe Substance 3D Modeler.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sathya then moved the project to Autodesk 3ds Max to use retopology tools for automatic optimization geometry of his high-resolution models to create a clean, quad-based mesh. This is useful for removing artifacts and other mesh issues before animation and rigging.<\/p>\n<p>GPU-enabled, RTX-accelerated AI denoising with the default Autodesk Arnold renderer in the viewport allowed for smoother, highly interactive modeling.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64600\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64600\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/studio-itns-keerthan-sathya-wk60-retopology-tools-1280w.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-64600\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/studio-itns-keerthan-sathya-wk60-retopology-tools-1280w-672x378.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"378\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64600\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sathya used retopology tools in Autodesk 3ds Max.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"simplePullQuote right\">\n<p>\u201cMy NVIDIA GPU is an integral part of the artwork I create. Modeling, texturing, staging, painting and lighting is all accelerated by RTX.\u201d \u2014 Keerthan Sathya<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/2023\/05\/17\/adobe-substance-3d-omniverse-enhance-creative-freedom\/\">Adobe Substance 3D Painter<\/a> was a \u201cgame changer\u201d allowing super-fast asset painting, Sathya said. RTX-accelerated light and ambient occlusion bakes and optimizes assets in mere seconds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t necessarily need to create everything from scratch,\u201d Sathya said. \u201cSubstance 3D Painter offers a wide range of materials, smart materials and smart masks which I used in my project, along with a whole collection of materials that helped me save a lot of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can even paint multiple channels on multiple UDIMs in real time,\u201d said Sathya. This means textures on various models can have different resolutions. For example, 4K-resolution textures can be used for priority details, while 2K resolution can be tapped for less important touches.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64603\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64603\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/studio-itns-keerthan-sathya-wk60-substance-painter-1280w.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-64603\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/studio-itns-keerthan-sathya-wk60-substance-painter-1280w-672x378.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"378\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64603\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Textures were applied quickly and efficiently in Adobe Substance 3D Painter powered by an NVIDIA RTX GPU.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sathya imported <i>Tiny Mammoth <\/i>into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/omniverse\/creators\/\">NVIDIA Omniverse<\/a>, a platform for developing and building industrial metaverse applications, via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/omniverse\/apps\/create\/\">USD Composer<\/a> app. This is where the artist accomplished staging, environment preparation, lighting and rendering.<\/p>\n<div class=\"simplePullQuote right\">\n<p>\u201cNVIDIA Omniverse is a great platform for artists to connect their desired 3D apps and collaborate. Plus, I really like AI-driven apps and features.\u201d \u2014 Keerthan Sathya<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sathya marveled at the ease of setting up the scene in USD Composer. \u201cJust using a few assets \u2014 instancing, arranging and kitbashing them to make a huge environment \u2014 is so satisfying and efficient,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sathya said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/omniverse\/usd\/\">OpenUSD<\/a> is \u201cso much more than just a file format.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe OpenUSD workflow is great to work with,\u201d he said. \u201cI used OpenUSD pretty much for the whole project: environment assets and textures, foliage, lighting, still camera and adjustment of layers for each shot if necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64606\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64606\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/studio-itns-keerthan-sathya-wk60-usd-files-1280w.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-64606\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/studio-itns-keerthan-sathya-wk60-usd-files-1280w-655x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"655\" height=\"500\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64606\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">OpenUSD files neatly organized.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With each OpenUSD layer and file stacked and authored accordingly, Sathya had the option to plug and play assets and creative workflow stages. Such versatility in 3D creative workflows is enabled by Omniverse and OpenUSD.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64609\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64609\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/studio-itns-keerthan-sathya-wk60-ov-lighting-1280w.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-64609\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/studio-itns-keerthan-sathya-wk60-ov-lighting-1280w-672x378.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"378\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64609\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Scene tweaks in Omniverse USD Composer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The artist heightened realism by painting moss trees with USD Composer\u2019s paint tool. \u201cIt was easy to add those tiny details to make my artwork look better,\u201d he said. Sathya then rotated the camera and adjusted the lighting until he met his desired result.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the sheer size of the scene, Sathya used real-time rendering to add animations, a bit of fog and corrections for limited renders. \u201cI like the idea of render passes, where you have a complete control of the scene while compositing, but it wasn\u2019t necessary here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sathya exported the scene into Adobe After Effects for post-processing and additional visual effects, using more than 30 GPU-accelerated features and effects to add even more detail.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64612\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64612\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/studio-itns-keerthan-sathya-wk60-effects-ae-1280w.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-64612\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/studio-itns-keerthan-sathya-wk60-effects-ae-1280w-672x378.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"378\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64612\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More visual effects in Adobe After Effects.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The artist reviewed video feedback in Adobe Rush. \u201cIt\u2019s more convenient when I\u2019m traveling or on my couch to arrange the shots and do some quick edits on my phone,\u201d he said.
