We\u2019re also deep diving on new <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/geforce\/graphics-cards\/40-series\/\"><i>GeForce RTX 40 Series GPU<\/i><\/a><i> features, technologies and resources, and how they dramatically accelerate content creation.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re gonna need a bigger boat this week <i>In the NVIDIA Studio<\/i> as Alessandro Mastronardi, senior artist and programmer at BBC Studios, shares heart-stopping shark videos and renders.<\/p>\n<p>The shark-themed series was conceived during the artist\u2019s recent impromptu trip to Iceland, where he saw a huge basking shark up close. \u201cI was eager to know all about its anatomy, the way it moves and feeds,\u201d said Mastronardi.<\/p>\n<p>After deep-diving on the sharks \u2014 including great whites, hammerheads and the <i>Elasmobranchii<\/i> subclass of rays and the like \u2014 he was ready to create. Learn more about his creative journey below \u2014 there\u2019s no-fin to lose.<\/p>\n<p>His incredible visuals \u2014 alongside extraordinary shark-themed artwork from creators Maggie Molloy and Hypertaf \u2014 are featured below in the latest Studio Standout video, which spotlights incredible artists and their work.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Plus, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/studio\/\">NVIDIA Studio<\/a> #StartToFinish community challenge runs through the end of August. channels.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Jaw-some Creativity<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Mastronardi, based in Florence, Italy, works to bring the awe-inspiring beauty of mother nature to the masses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe satisfaction of studying nature in all its forms \u2014 then transforming that information and reference material into art and content used in several productions and scopes \u2014 has been my greatest pride and joy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/week67-alessandro-mostronardi-buddies-1280w.png\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" process by sketching ideas and concepts on paper. \u201cThis is something I\u2019ve done since my first years, as it helps to have a clear vision of what I want to achieve,\u201d said GeForce RTX GPUs are the most reliable, highest-performing, advanced graphics cards that any 3D professional can use.\u201d \u2014 Alessandro Mastronardi<\/p>\n<p>Next, Mastronardi uses ZBrush to model all of his characters. \u201cI like to define a base shape, carefully tune proportions and anatomy, and add detail and resolution until I have a high-polygon, fully detailed, featured character that\u2019s finely sculpted and textured,\u201d he said. \u201cThis stage isn\u2019t complete until I\u2019m fully satisfied with how the character looks from every angle, and it has its own personality, so to speak.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_65596\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65596\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/week67-great-white-wip6-1280w.png\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/week67-great-white-wip6-1280w-648x500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"648\" height=\"500\"><\/p>\n<p><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-65596\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tremendous effort goes into the tiniest details.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The artist exports characters to Blender to retopologize the high-polygon mesh into low-poly, highly optimized characters. \u201cThe key is to reproject the highest possible level of detail onto the character, so that all the details will be maintained.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_65599\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65599\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/week67-alessandro-mastronardi-great-white-1280w.png\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/week67-alessandro-mastronardi-great-white-1280w-390x500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"390\" height=\"500\"><\/p>\n<p><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-65599\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Scary stuff.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Next, Mastronardi rigs the character and sets up a skeleton, configuring all digital bones and inverse kinematics, which determine the motion of objects in the scene.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_65602\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65602\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/week66-basking-shark-bender-scene-1280w.png\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/week66-basking-shark-bender-scene-1280w-672x378.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"378\"><\/p>\n<p><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-65602\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Animation work in Blender.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"simplePullQuote right\">\n<p>\u201cThe render stage is GPU accelerated and uses OptiX ray-tracing application programming interfaces, which allow fantastic quality and performance.\u201d \u2014 Alessandro Mastronardi\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Here, Mastronardi\u2019s PC \u2014 equipped with two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/geforce\/graphics-cards\/30-series\/rtx-3090-3090ti\/\">GeForce RTX 3090 Ti<\/a> 24GB GPUs \u2014 does the heavy lifting. Blender Cycles RTX-accelerated AI-powered OptiX ray tracing in the viewport ensures interactive, photorealistic rendering for modeling and animation.<\/p>\n<p>This rigorous process delivers lifelike animations. \u201cA lot of care has to go into the control-rig stage,\u201d said Mastronardi. \u201cAll controls must allow for plausible and realistic deformations, with proper anatomy limits and characteristics, so that the character\u2019s movement will look and feel realistic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also using Blender, the artist sets up shaders and materials, and conducts test renders to evaluate how the characters look in different poses. When satisfied, Mastronardi prepares promotional images \u2014 built in an environment that matches the characters \u2014 and assembles a scene with added effects and props.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_65605\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65605\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/week67-basking-shark-wip-1280w.png\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/week67-basking-shark-wip-1280w-658x500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"658\" height=\"500\"><\/p>\n<p><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-65605\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Properly themed environments elevate the characters within them.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Often, Mastronardi inspects his models with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/omniverse\/creators\/\">NVIDIA Omniverse<\/a>, a platform for connecting and building custom 3D tools and applications <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/omniverse\/usd\/\">with Universal Scene Description (OpenUSD)<\/a>. \u201cOmniverse is my preferred platform to inspect scenes very quickly,\u201d he said. \u201cI like how agile and effective the interface is, as well as the quality it can deliver.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_65608\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65608\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/week67-hammerhead-popup1-1280w_.png\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/week67-hammerhead-popup1-1280w_-645x500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"645\" height=\"500\"><\/p>\n<p><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-65608\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Simply stunning.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mastronardi exports final files using RTX-accelerated OptiX ray tracing in Blender Cycles for the fastest final frame render. \u201cI love the Cycles render engine, all its features, and the quality and speed that it\u2019s able to deliver,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mastronardi plans to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/geforce\/broadcasting\/broadcast-app\/\">NVIDIA Broadcast app<\/a> \u2014 from the NVIDIA Studio suite of AI-powered tools \u2014 for a new series of 3D art lectures on wildlife, coming soon.
