He coded a robot to paint the beginning stages of an art piece \u2014 like \u201da printer that can pick up a brush\u201d \u2014 to save time.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until Van Arman took part in the DARPA Grand Challenge, a prize competition for autonomous vehicles, that he was inspired to bring AI into his art.<\/p>\n<p>Now, his robots are capable of creating artwork all on their own through the use of deep neural networks and feedback loops. Van Arman is never far away, though, sometimes pausing a robot to adjust its code and provide it some artistic guidance.<\/p>\n<p>Van Arman\u2019s work is on display in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/gtc\/ai-art-gallery\/\">AI Art Gallery<\/a> at GTC 2020, and he\u2019ll be giving conference attendees a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/gtc\/session-catalog\/?search.language=1594320459782001LCjF&amp;search=22162&amp;tab.catalogtabfields=1600209910618001TWM3\">virtual tour<\/a> of his studio on Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. Pacific time.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Key Points From This Episode:<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>One of Van Arman\u2019s most recent projects is <a href=\"https:\/\/artonomo.us\/\">artonomous<\/a>, an artificially intelligent painting robot that is learning the subtleties of fine art.
