This architecture enables complete development of physical AI systems, from training to deployment.<\/p>\n<h2><b>What Is Physical AI, and Why Does It Matter?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/what-is-agentic-ai\/\">agentic AI<\/a>, which operates in digital environments, physical AI are end-to-end models that can perceive, reason, interact with and navigate the physical world.<\/p>\n<p>For 60 years, \u201cSoftware 1.0\u201d \u2014 serial code written by human programmers \u2014 ran on general-purpose computers powered by CPUs.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in 2012, Alex Krizhevsky, mentored by Ilya Sutskever and Geoffrey Hinton, won the ImageNet computer image recognition competition with AlexNet, a revolutionary <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/glossary\/data-science\/deep-learning\/\" rel=\"noopener\">deep learning<\/a> model for image classification.<\/p>\n<p>This marked the industry\u2019s first contact with AI. The breakthrough of machine learning \u2014 neural networks running on GPUs \u2014 jumpstarted the era of Software 2.0.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-74908 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/software1.02.0-1680x945.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1680\" height=\"945\"><\/p>\n<p>Today, software writes software. The world\u2019s computing workloads are shifting from general-purpose computing on CPUs to accelerated computing on GPUs, leaving Moore\u2019s law far behind.<\/p>\n<p>With generative AI, multimodal <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/what-is-a-transformer-model\/\">transformer<\/a> and diffusion models have been trained to generate responses.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/glossary\/large-language-models\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Large language models<\/a> are one-dimensional \u2014 able to predict the next token in modes like letters or words. Image- and video-generation models are two-dimensional, able to predict the next pixel.<\/p>\n<p>None of these models can understand or interpret the 3D world. That\u2019s where physical AI comes in.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>A robot is a system that can perceive, reason, plan, act and learn. Robots are often thought of as autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), manipulator arms or humanoids. But there are many other types of robotic embodiments.<\/p>\n<p>In the near future, everything that moves, or that monitors things that move, will be an autonomous robotic system. These systems will be capable of sensing and responding to their environments.<\/p>\n<p>Everything from autonomous vehicles, surgical rooms to data centers, warehouses to factories, even traffic-control systems or entire smart cities will transform from static, manually operated systems to autonomous, interactive systems embodied by physical AI.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-83505 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/ai-and-omniverse-three-computer-solution-1680x945.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1680\" height=\"945\"><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why Are Humanoid Robots the Next Frontier?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Humanoid robots are an ideal general-purpose robotic manifestation because they can operate efficiently in environments built for humans while requiring minimal adjustments for deployment and operation.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/insights\/articles\/the-global-market-for-robots-could-reach-38-billion-by-2035\" rel=\"noopener\">global market for humanoid robots<\/a> is expected to reach $38 billion by 2035, a more than sixfold increase from the roughly $6 billion for the period forecast nearly two years ago, according to Goldman Sachs.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers and developers around the world are racing to build this next wave of robots.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-83493 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/robot-development-three-computer-solution-1680x945.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1680\" height=\"945\"><\/p>\n<h2><b>How Do NVIDIA\u2019s Three Computers Work Together for Robotics?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Robots learn how to understand the physical world using three distinct types of computational intelligence \u2014 each serving a critical role in the development pipeline.<\/p>\n<p><b>1. Training Computer: NVIDIA DGX<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Imagine trying to teach a robot to understand natural language, recognize objects and plan complex movements \u2014 all simultaneously. LLM researchers are fortunate to have the world\u2019s internet data at their disposal for pretraining. But this doesn\u2019t exist for physical AI.<\/p>\n<p>Real-world robot data is limited, costly, and difficult to collect, particularly when preparing for edge cases that lie beyond what pretraining can reach. Collecting data is labor intensive, making it expensive and hard to scale.<\/p>\n<p>Developers can use Omniverse and Cosmos to generate massive amounts of physically based, diverse <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/glossary\/synthetic-data-generation\/\" rel=\"noopener\">synthetic data<\/a> \u2014 whether 2D or 3D images, segmentation or depth map, or motion and trajectory data, to bootstrap model training and performance.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-83496 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/isaac-gr00t-three-computer-solution.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"446\"><\/p>\n<p>To ensure robot models are safe and performant before deploying in the real world, developers need to simulate and test their models in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/glossary\/digital-twin\/\" rel=\"noopener\">digital twin<\/a> environments.
